What Are Power Rails?

Module chassis-power rails are modules that perform power distribution, switching and enhancement for various power rail circuits. The power supply unit (PSU) distributes these power rails to hardware using wires and connectors. One PSU may have different volt rails, such as a 3.3-volt rail and a 5-volt rail. Each volt rail has its own wires and connectors to power different mechanics. 

A rail is the direct current (DC) voltage in a power supply. The alternating current (AC) power from a computer is converted into DC voltages, and each voltage is called a rail. Each conductor, depending on its size, gets different voltage and current amounts. When the power rails deliver the correct voltage, the system will be reliable with excellent performance and high uptime.

Uses for Power Rails

Power rail modules are used for powering computer parts such as chips, fans, disk drives and hard disks. The computer workstation connects to a chassis using a controller programming network. The chassis connects to the power rail module, which provides power to servo motors and other equipment for production.

Common Problems and Questions With Power Rails

As technology develops, computers are getting new, faster chips and parts. These new chips increase the load on the power rails, leading to the need for higher voltage rails that can deliver the power needed. The chips consume most of the power for the computer from the power rails. Common power rail voltages are 15, 12, 5 and 3.3 volts, with higher voltages present in legacy systems only. 

Another feature of new chips is larger amounts of smaller transistors. Since these transistors are small, they require lower volt rails for operation. Newer motherboards have DC/DC converters that convert the voltage from the PSU into the lower voltage these transistors need, such as 1.8, 1.2 and 0.8 volts.

Since wattage distribution on power rails has changed in PSUs, you will need to examine the PSU’s wattage specifications before using it with a new computer. If the PSU and computer are not compatible, the computer can overload the power rails in the PSU.
