Circuit Protection
Electrical equipment plays an essential role in daily life. It can be easy to take electronic equipment’s smooth functioning for granted until there is a problem and machinery, computers and HVAC systems need to shut down. Circuit protection aims to keep most electronic equipment up and running by protecting it from damage.
They can take multiple forms, but the overall goal of circuit protection devices and parts is to cut off power to a piece of equipment the instant a problem is detected.

What Is Circuit Protection?
Circuit protection is a weak link in an electrical circuit. The weak link is intentional, as it’s meant to be broken if a fault occurs, such as too much current, a short circuit or excessive temperatures. When the link breaks, it cuts off electrical power to the rest of the machine, limiting damage.
Circuit protection does more than keep your company’s equipment from breaking. It also protects lives by preventing high fault currents from flowing and disconnecting electrical supplies when there is a fault or overload.
Types of Circuit Protection Parts
Since circuit protection parts are designed to break, they tend to need frequent replacement. Some of the replacement parts your company might need to keep its equipment operating safely include:
- Power filters: Power filters limit electromagnetic interference in the power lines of modern electronic equipment. The filters are required for equipment to meet regulatory standards.
- Line reactors: Line reactors protect variable frequency drives from voltage surges and spikes. They limit harmonics and current flow, too.
- Overload relays: Overload relays open a circuit when there is a power or electrical overload. They protect motors from damage due to overloads, overcurrents, phase imbalance and input phase loss.
- Overload heaters: Overload heaters generate heat, imitating the motor’s thermal qualities. They prevent overcurrent in large motors.
- Circuit breakers: Circuit breakers monitor electrical current and will switch off if the current becomes too much. They are a critical tool for preventing fires and protecting equipment.
- Fuses: A fuse is a piece of wire that melts easily. If a circuit becomes too hot, the fuse heats up enough that it snaps, cutting the circuit.
- Surge suppressors: Surge suppressors prevent or minimize damage caused by voltage spikes in AC motors. They work by maintaining a constant power supply to a piece of equipment.
- Safety relays: Safety relays reduce risk by implementing a response based on the threat detected. Your company might connect multiple relays to a piece of equipment to offer the most protection.
