CNC Machines

A day doesn’t go by that I don’t hear about a CNC application. CNC machines are used across EVERY industry!  They rely on computers rather than humans to produce at enormous speed and accuracy. So, what is A CNC?

A CNC is the automation of machine tools by means of computers executing pre-programmed sequences of machine control commands.

This is in contrast to machines that are manually controlled by hand wheels or levers, or mechanically automated by cams alone.  There are so many different types of CNC cutters.  Three common types are router, plasma and laser cutters.

Router –

a computer controlled cutting device use for cutting foam, plastic, steel and wood.  I found many that can do laser engraving and have 3D printing capabilities.  A CNC router allows factories and shops to produce massive quantities of the same products and custom pieces such as: furniture, musical instruments, inlays, door moldings, trim automotive parts and more!  CNC routers use advanced precision servo technology.

Plasma-

a cutting torch that is used to cut metal plates, copper, straps, bolts, pipes and sheet metal.  They can cut at fast speeds and reduce job cycle times.  This type of CNC is found in automotive, salvage, scrapping and construction industries.  Advanced plasma cutters are able to cut thicker metals allowing for precision welding and many companies have developed both horizontal and vertical plasma cutters for more flexibility!  CNC technology was applied to plasma cutters in the 1980’s!

Laser –

directs the output high power laser through optics.  These types of cutters are used to cut flat material such as acrylic, aluminum, film, fabric and paper.  Laser CNC’s are typically used in many industrial applications such as automotive, aerospace, textile industry and the paper industry.  Laser cutters provide a high quality finish.

There are so many other types of CNC machines, this has barely scratched the surface of their abilities. It is amazing that there are machines for home use that have the same technology that the industrial applications have!  The CNC technology has grown so much since 1980!  I can’t wait to see what is next!  Please share with us below what kind of CNC Machines you have!
